Grade 4-English Language Arts (ELA)
Fourth graders grow their literacy and writing learning throughout the year by engaging in hands-on, team-building inquiry projects. There is a deep emphasis on fluency in reading and deeper comprehension of texts. Our classroom communities work to continue building skills that are purposeful and necessary to meet grade level benchmarks, and lead the way on the road towards academic and worldly success.
Literacy skills taught in 4th grade include:
Referring and locating details in a text and explaining in your own words what it says
Using text features (charts, graphs, diagrams, timelines, animations, and illustrations) to understand non-fiction texts
Making inferences
Writing detailed bit by bit summaries that focus on the theme or central idea
Interpreting others’ points of view in a variety of genres
Describing story elements such as setting, plot, characters, etc.
Identifying the differences between character traits and feelings/emotions
Pulling out text evidence to support the what and why of a story
Writing skills taught in 4th grade include:
Gathering ideas and information to produce narrative, opinion, and informative pieces
Identifying what structure goes with each type of writing I aim to produce
Produce writing that helps the reader create a mental image of the scene and/or characters
Creating dialogue between characters using correct punctuation to show characters’ response to situations
Producing writing that shows what is happening instead of telling
Creating an annotated bibliography of sources
Grade 4-Mathematics
Fourth graders will apply the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to solve problems. Through the use of movement, games, manipulatives and technology, students use their knowledge to expand on previously taught skills and experiences. All students are given the opportunity to have access to grade level curriculum as well as practice developing skills.
Math skills taught in 4th grade include:
Adding and subtracting multi digit numbers
Place value & Rounding to the millions
Comparing numbers to the millions
Multiply and divide up to 4 digits using different methods
Use properties to show relationships between place value and multiplication
Identify patterns
Area and perimeter in the real world
Solving word problems using taught strategies
Substituting values
Evaluating number sentences
Metric units and for liquid, volume and mass
Customary units for length, liquid volume and weight
Unit conversions and units of time
Understanding fractions by comparing the size
Building fractions from smaller fractions
Adding and subtracting fractions
Multiplying a whole number times a fraction
Converting fractions with denominators of 10, 100, and 1,000 into decimals
Comparing decimals and fractions using greater than >, less than <, and equal to =
Converting fractions greater than 1 to mixed numbers
Identify types of angles
Identifying types of lines
Measuring angles with a protractor
Classifying shapes
